Sustainability and Ethics

Responsible action, sustainability, environmental concerns and integrity are fundamental values for Signer Titanium. We are guided by the fundamental ethical principles of the United Nations, in particular human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, the handling of conflict materials and the fight against corruption. Our Code of Conduct defines our basic values and principles according to which we conduct our business and which help us and our business partners to implement high standards. Our Code of Conduct is firmly anchored in our management handbook.

The sustainability of our actions is an important component of our day-to-day business. We are committed to a sustainable environmental policy and also address these issues in our management handbook. This includes the handling of waste and used materials and their proper disposal, the economical use of energy, the use of resource-saving products and equipment, preventive maintenance and environmentally friendly transportation.

Our climate is important to us. The main part of the carbon footprint of a semi-finished titanium product is the production of the preliminary product titanium sponge, which is produced from the minerals rutile and ilmenite using the Kroll process. The desired titanium melting ingot is then produced from the titanium sponge and a significant proportion of titanium scrap. We have addressed this issue in our supply chain and our indirect main suppliers have already taken a number of measures to reduce their CO2 footprint. Depending on the energy mix and scrap content, this can also be substantially reduced.

Starting in 2020, we have compensated all our CO2-emissions caused by land transport, sea freight and air freight. We influence the logistics chain and we encourage our customers to avoid air freight shipments whenever possible. The offset CO2 emissions are calculated annually, converted into a monetary amount and invested in local and global carbon offset projects through the "myclimate" foundation (www.myclimate.org). In addition, all business trips by air are CO2 compensated. Here you can find our confiramtions for the compensation.

The paperless office at Signer Titanium is not yet fully realized. That's why we use sustainably produced printer paper that carries the "Blue Angel, a German eco-label (www.blauer-engel.de). These meet high criteria regarding environmental, health and usage properties throughout their entire life cycle.

Signer Titanium supports sustainable projects of the "Opportunity International". This foundation fights against poverty according to the motto: "Helping small businesses to help themselves". In poorer areas of the world, the foundation promotes projects in education, health, agriculture and supports extremely poor families, so-called Ultrapoor projects (www.opportunity.org).

Signer Titanium is evaluated annually by EcoVadis to determine the sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) measures taken. In the first evaluation in February 2020, we immediately achieved the 63rd percentile rank and this was rewarded with a bronze medal (www.ecovadis.com).

We have also joined CDP, a global, non-profit carbon disclosure organisation, to measure and understand environmental impacts. Over the past 20 years, the organisation has created a system that guides investors, companies, cities and regions in defining and implementing measures to build a sustainable economy and its environmental impact (www.cdp.net).
